A partnership with major concert promoter Live Nation will bring upward of 185 annual events to

, officials said today.

Vision Entertainment Group, the company behind Steel Ice Center in Bethlehem, will be the operator of the 50,000-square-foot facility. Conventions will be booked through

, the other partner in the facility expected to open in May.

Sands was originally going to do the events center itself. Originally intended to open alongside the casino in May 2009, the economic recession halted construction on the events center in October 2008.

In the meantime, Vision Entertainment Group was working on plans itself to bring a major concert venue to the Lehigh Valley.

in February 2010 convinced Sands and Vision to start working together on a shared events center.

Sands Bethlehem President Robert DeSalvio said he thinks the partnership still meets Sands' goals for the facility despite a greater emphasis on concerts. He said the ability to partner with a major concert promoter like Live Nation made concerts a bigger part of the facility.

Vision Entertainment Group co-founder Jerry Deifer said the 3,500-person concert facility will be akin to the Borgata in Atlantic City and Tower Theatre outside of Philadelphia. Both venues attract major music acts, and the Sands Bethlehem Events Center will, too, he said.

The 3,500 people will be the facility’s maximum for an all-standing show, Deifer said. Seated shows will have 1,750 to 2,200 tickets available, he said.

The 3,000-person concert venue is hot these days in music, Deifer said. It’s a far more popular-sized venue than an arena, which may only get a dozen shows a year, he said.

President Jeff Parks, who attended today’s announcement about the Sands entertainment center, agreed with Deifer’s assessment. Parks independently cited 3,000-person venues as popular in concert booking these days.

ArtsQuest’s new

, on the same former Bethlehem Steel Corp. land as Sands, fits between 450 people at tables and chairs and about 1,000 standing. Parks said 500-person concert venues also are popular now for smaller acts.

Live Nation, which in 2010 merged with Ticketmaster, is the nation’s largest concert promoter, DeSalvio said. In the greater Philadelphia area, the company is promoting the concerts of Steely Dan, Incubus, Blink 182, Enrique Iglesias, Duran Duran and the Smashing Pumpkins.

Live Nation brought a dozen employees to today’s announcement, including Mid-Atlantic President Geoff Gordon.

Deifer said he expects the events center to host 185 to 225 live events each year. In addition to concerts, the events will include comedians, boxing and other sporting events and top disc jockeys, Trainer said.

DeSalvio estimated the number of annual events on the lower end but said even 200 events would leave plenty of time for conventions. Most events are on the weekends or at night while most conventions are during the week, he said.

DeSalvio said he couldn’t estimate how many conventions the center might host annually because convention business in the Lehigh Valley is largely uncharted territory. The 50,000-square-foot events center will be more than four times the size of any other convention space available in the Lehigh Valley, Discover Lehigh Valley President Mike Stershic said.

Convention space at the larger Lehigh Valley hotels range from 6,000 to 12,000 square feet, he said. Sands also has the Lehigh Valley’s largest hotel with 302 rooms, Stershic said.

Construction has restarted on the event center, which is currently a steel shell behind Sands' hotel. It is expected to open in May at the latest, Deifer said.

Sands is employing Allentown-based Alvin H. Butz to build the core and shell of the facility while Vision has hired South Whitehall Township-based Serfass Construction Co. to do the interior. Vision is expected to employ 100 to 125 full- and part-time workers at the facility. About 1,600 people currently work at the casino.
